Academic strength is the foundation of a nation's original innovation and basic-science capability. Internationally, the "Nature Index" published by Springer Nature measures the research output of countries/institutions by publications and author-share contributions in 145 top journals worldwide; Clarivate's "Highly Cited Researchers" and ESI highly cited papers emphasize impact. Each of these lists has its own emphasis, but their ranking calibers and methodologies may not fully reflect a country's "comprehensive academic strength."
This index does not directly reproduce the rankings of public lists such as the Nature Index; instead, it takes their underlying public data (total papers, highly cited papers, top-journal publications, Nobel Prizes, research funding, and researchers) and redesigns the weights and independently computes the ranking according to CPPPS's own four-dimension evaluation framework of "Scale + Quality + Innovation + Contribution." This is CPPPS's consistent stance: never copy rankings, only compute data, with an open and reproducible algorithm.
Four-dimension mapping: Scale corresponds to total papers and the number of researchers (volume and talent); Quality corresponds to highly cited papers and publications in top journals such as Nature and Science (impact and top journals); Innovation corresponds to top-tier original achievements such as Nobel Prizes in natural science; Contribution corresponds to research funding investment and the growth rate of highly cited papers—that is, a country's investment in and marginal contribution to the global scientific community (a CPPPS-distinctive dimension: it considers both current investment and the rapidly rising increment, objectively reflecting that the high-quality output of emerging academic powers is rising fast).
Results: among about 30 major academic countries/regions worldwide, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan rank in the top five. Overall, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany—strong in both scale and quality and with deep innovation accumulation—lead the field; China, with the world's largest paper output and fast-growing high-quality papers, follows closely behind the United States, with notable advantages in the volume and contribution dimensions; traditional academic powers such as Japan, France, South Korea, Canada, and Australia remain solidly in the upper-middle ranks. This ranking is based on publicly known approximate values, is annotated "subject to official sources," remains permanently free and public, and is provided for research and reference only.
